Gertrude Stein and a Companion
November 12-16, 2008

A literary and stylish portrait of the lives of Gertrude Stein and Alice Toklas. The script, adapted by Win Wells from Stein's and Toklas' writings, is performed by Joyce Cavarozzi as Gertrude Stein and Elizabeth Willis as Alice Toklas. The play begins the afternoon of July 27, 1946, and Gertrude Stein is dead. Now "alone" in their famous salon, a place usually alive with gatherings of the avant-garde from the literary and art worlds, Alice sets out to write to Picasso with the news of Gertrude's death. In her attempt to tell how it happened, she begins to relive the events of their lives together. In a style not unlike Stein's free verse, scenes from their public and private life are interwoven with Alice's recollections. The Tempest
April 15-19, 2009

The power of Art to transform both the Artist and the Audience is a major focus of this adaptation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece, The Tempest by award-winning stage director Shaun-Michael Morse (Inventing Van Gogh, Grapes of Wrath). Prospero, a modern day painter, is struggling to complete what he desperately hopes will be his greatest masterpiece, an enormous painting. When physical and emotional barriers combine to push the artist past his breaking point, life and art collide in unthinkable ways. As paint touches canvas, Prospero’s enemies in life quickly become figures in the painting that are transported to a world in which Prospero, as creator, appears to control the fate of all with the flip of a brush. A set inspired by expressionistic painters such as Franz Kline, Hans Hoffman, and the music of composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, will make this an unforgettable visual and emotional experience.
