Located on the Arkansas River in Kansas, USA, Wichita is the largest city in the state and both a cultural and economical hub for the region. In 2018, over 640,000 people lived in the Wichita metropolitan area.

The confluence of the Arkansas River and the Little Arkansas River has made this area a desirable spot to live since prehistoric times, and archaeological findings show that this place was inhabited as early as 3,000 BCE. When the first Spanish explorers arrived in 1541, the area was populated by the Wichita people, also known as the Quivira. During a part of the colonial period, the region was ruled by France as a part of Louisiana. In 1803, it was included in the Louisiana Purchase, and thus became a part of the United States. Wichita grew from a trading post to a city in the 19th century and became an important destination for cowboys driving cattle from Texas to the railroad stations in Kansas.

As a cultural hub for the whole region, Wichita is home to numerous museums, theaters, and other venues for cultural pursuits, and several performing arts groups are based in the city – in addition to the individual artists. Small art galleries are scattered around the city, especially in Old Town, Delano, and the south Commerce street.

The Wichita Art Museum

With over 7,000 works of art in permanent collections, The Wichita Art Museum is the largest art museum in the whole state.
